Cybercrime, also called computer criminal offenses, is any illegitimate activity which involves a computer or network-connected device, such as a mobile phone. The department of justice divides cyber crime into three categories: crimes in which the computing device is the target, for instance, to gain network access; crimes in which the computer can be used as a weapon, for example, to launch a Denial of service (DoS) strike; and crimes in which the computer can be used as an accessory to a crime, for example, by using a computer to store illegally-obtained data.

1. Phishing – The aim is to trick people into handing over their credit card details or access to protected systems. Emails are sent out that may contain either links or attachments that either take one to a site that looks like your bank’s, or installations malware on your system.
A report by Verizon into data breach inspections has shown that 23% of folks open phishing e-mail.

2. Identity theft – Relating to fraud protection organization Cifas, the number of victims rose by thirty-one percent to 32,058 in the first three months of 2015. Criminals use online ‘fraud forums’ to buy and sell credit cards, email address and passports.

3. Hacking – In a Verizon review of security breaches, there were 285 million data exposures, which works out to about 9 records uncovered every second. 26% of these attacks were performed internally within organizations.

That is estimated that 90% of most data records that were utilized in criminal offenses was a result of hackers employed by organized crime.

4. Online harassment – Over 50 % of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, while 73% of adult users have seen someone bothered in some manner online and forty percent have experienced it.
