A virus at Hitachi Payments Solutions led to over thirty-two lakh debit cards in India being compromised. Hitachi is one of the companies that operate ATMs in India. The affected debit cards were used in ATMs that are suspected to obtain exposed details of the cards to the malware.

A officer of NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India), an umbrella company for all retail repayment systems, said the infringement occurred a month back. Yet, the loss is minute and banks will have to individually offer with it.

He further clarified that the mistake has nothing to do with banks, adding that the malware has recently been detected and corrective steps taken.

Which cards are affected?
Of the Debit Cards affected, 2.6 million take Visa and MasterCard platforms, while six lakh the RuPay platform. The worst-hit of the card-issuing banks are ICICI bank, SBI, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and Yes Bank.

As being a precautionary evaluate, the SBI and its subsidiaries have blocked 6 lakh cards.
