Most cyber crime cases registered in the year 2016 remain unsolved

The cases of banking scams cyber harassment, impersonation on social media sites, and job and lottery frauds registered with the city’s cyber law enforcement department back in 2016 have decreased significantly. On the other hand, the number of instances solved by the cyber cell has remained regularly low the past four years, with only 20 percent success rate.

Eighty per cent of the crimes registered in the year 2016 stays undetected, based on the report distributed by the cyber cellular. It also reveals that the entire number of instances registered in the 12 months in 2016 has gone down by 50 % vis-a-vis the last 12 months. Two eighty-two instances were registered in 2015, which dipped to one hundred forty-five in 2016.

Despite the fact that the number of the cases reported at the cyber police train station has reduced, officers declare that the figures have sunk owing to the awareness campaigns and sign up of cyber complaints comprise of police stations of Mumbai also.

Meanwhile, the cyber police officers also say, “detecting cyber instances have become challenging as the majority of the criminals use servers based out of India. This provides a major hurdle in solving the cases due to long drawn procedures that are mainly off our limit. All of us have been constantly working on it to split down online frauds and are closing down websites which have been involved in sharing obscene content among other crimes, “said a senior officer from the cyber police station.

The officer also added that “There is a need to upgrade skilled personnel and technology to help identify cases more quickly”.

Interestingly, though the number of vishing instances registered with the internet police station has shot down, the Twitter handle of Mumbai Police is overloaded with citizens tweeting the mobile numbers that they received calls requesting bank and card details.

The online team of Mumbai Police forwards these issues to the BKC cyber police station and also keeps guiding and caution people against taking such calls and disclosing personal details to anyone appearing as a bank recognized.
