WhatsApp, Paytm hunting grounds for cyber criminals
By Prempal Singh
The interconnectivity of social media means it is now the perfect hunting surface for cybercrime.
In light of this growing pattern, the CCPS (Cyber Crime Police Station) at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) has recently been flooded with new instances of fraud, wherein the accounts of WhatAapp users are being hacked.
The conmen reach out to people on the victim’s contact list and inquire them to transfer funds for their Paytm account to meet exigencies.
In the previous month, the authorities has received about 100 complaints with a similar trend. Law enforcement claims the victims are lured into the internet scam through links distributed on WhatsApp. Unassuming users are then led to a fake website which infects their phones with malware, allowing the scammer to obtain sensitive information. “Most victims don’t deal with us because the fraud isn’t big enough to allow them to notice. They need to exercise caution, ” said an officer.
