As you may stand in a long queue to deposit money in the bank, internet criminals in a tiny area of Jharkhand are occupied siphoning your money by making phone calls appearing as bankers.

According to cyber experts, cases of phishing attacks have eliminated up since the government’s demonetisation drive. The tribal-dominated Jamtara in Jharkhand has turned out to be notorious for cyber criminal offense cases and a huge quantity of youths in the district are located to be involved in such offenses.

Cyber detectives said 90 percent of purchase-related fraud calls made across the country are traced returning Jamtara. This has now evolved as the biggest center of organized cyber crime in India, said an internet security official.

Ballabh Singh of Adarsh Nagar in Delhi became a recent victim of such scams if he lost Rs 16, 000 after obtaining a call from a man who claimed to be calling from the headquarter of his bank. Singh believed the unknown caller as he had almost all of his banking details.

“The caller said he was calling from the head office of the bank in Mumbai so that as the consumer is a ‘loyal customer’, therefore, the bank is extending his deposit and withdrawal limit from the financial institution even after demonetization”, said an officer looking into the case.

“The unknown caller only asked for the OTP pin while being on call claiming that this was to confirm his account. But as soon as the call was disconnected, he found `16, 000 withdrawn from his account, ” the officer said, adding that the call was later traced to Jamtara.

Internet fraud training has surfaced as a cottage industry in Jamtara, and after demonetization, fraudsters have begun changing their modus operandi.

“Jamtara has turned away to be a hotbed of low-tech cyber scammers who target bank customers by making random phone calls. Good results. more people shifting to digital systems for transactions post demonetisation, these criminals are now targeting gullible customers by saying that their first deposit and withdrawal limits have been increased, ” said cyber crime expert Kislay Choudhary.

He said recent probes have revealed how criminals are buying specific data from portals to make target based attacks. Law enforcement said thousands of phone calls are recorded daily at cellphone towers in towns here every day.

The average literacy rate of Jamtara is about 65 %, much lower than the national average of 74 per cent. However, people here, surprisingly, are quite tech-savvy. The Karmatar police station here only accounts for more than 50% of cyber fraud.

Experts say it takes less than four days to learn cyber fraud in Jamtara’s ‘training centers’. Police say they have tightened the noose around telecom providers for issuing SIM cards on forged identity, great these villagers are heading to neighbouring West Bengal to buy SIM cards.
