The Biggest Bounties Facebook, Microsoft and More Have Paid Hackers

Hacking gets a bad reputation, mostly because people have a tendency to give attention to those away to do harm. Although there are many alleged “white hat” hackers who make an effort to uncover vulnerabilities. Many of today’s biggest tech and media businesses have launched “bug bounty” programs offering to pay this cyber-terrorist — or anyone — a lot of money to report weaknesses in their systems.

With bug bounties becoming so mainstream, companies are growing dedicated to finding these flaws. Startup HackerOne inspections for bugs in companies’ operations, and it lately announced a $40 millions series C funding circular.

Companies outside of technology also have launched their own bug bounty programs. The U. S. Army lately launched its program, “Hack the Army, ” and companies such as Starbucks and GM have also made it part of their operations.

“Bug bounty are now an essential part of the software lifecycle, ” HackerOne’s CEO Marten Mickos told fortune.

Recently, Facebook awarded the biggest bounty yet — $40,000 to a security researcher who uncovered a glitch in the image editing software, ImageMagick. In October 2016, the company posted to Facebook that it had paid out more than $5 million in bug bounties over the past five years.
