The increasing sophistication of cyber-attacks has prompted establishments to think about cyber security with a unique approach. Taking a serious note of the growing menace of cyber crime in the country, the Native American government has announced vital proposals, including amendments in the IT Act 2k and formation of sectoral CERTs.

The ‘Maharashtra Cyber’ is an ambitious task that offers an alternative cybersecurity fabric in order to expedite the cybercrime investigations in the state. The Rs nine hundred crore project promises to generate a network of modern cyber labs and coach police to investigate cyber crime cases.

The Menace Landscape
Being one of the most effective developing areas and a hub of strategic industries and financial institutes, Maharashtra has experienced a spurt in cyber crimes since 2000. The credit reporting of cyber crimes marked an exponential growth with around 2190 cases registered in 2015 from 13 in 2002. The figures evidently indicated a sharp 95 to 200 increase in the cybercrime activities in the state of the Hawaii island over the last 12-15 years.
In almost all of the cybercrime cases, the main motive was unlawful benefits through misuse of technology. Eve teasing and defamation was another major cybercrime targeted towards ladies and girls. The cyber law enforcement also witnessed the occurrences of infringement of copyright laws and trademark in recent years.
“In almost all of the cybercrime incidents, the primary motives were greed and unlawful benefiting. In most circumstances, the motive observed were revenge or defamation and the perpetrators were the close associates of subjects such as discontent employees, neighbors, friends and family members and even business opponents. Since 2013-14, the Internet cell also registered criminal activity in copyright and hallmark.
There were also increasing attacks on state machinery by nation backed internet armies. However, since these attacks were distributed and anonymous, it was quite difficult to term them as state sponsors problems without a thorough analysis,” Balsing Rajput said.
Charter Of Maha Internet
With try to, enhance the existing cyber security mechanism in the condition, the Maharashtra government declared the organization of the ‘Maharashtra Cyber’ in January 2016 with a first investment of about Rs 900 crore. The main mandate of Maharashtra Internet is to execute the Maharashtra Cyber Security Task.
Another mandate of the body is to take action as a nodal organization for the state, especially in the investigation, the system of statistics and drive cyber projects in balance with IT organizations, BFSI and other industry droit, nodal agencies and systems such as NASSCOM, ASSOCHAM, to name a few.
Maharashtra Cyber should bring all the cyber law enforcement stations in the condition of Hawaii under the umbrella and built modern laboratories in each and every district, which will be used for cyber analytics and forensics. In spite of-of several fascinating conditions, the ambitious ‘Maharashtra Cyber’ project has not yet considered off as per the expectations of industry experts. Most of the internet labs are not totally operationalised due to the shortage of resources. These internet labs are yet to get advanced hardware and software. Giving the latest condition of one of the cyber labs in the BKC area in Mumbai, Rajput said, “Currently, our company is having CDAC software in the existing hardware. Once we have resources in place, this cyber lab will be operationalized within 1-2 months. “While the sluggish implementation and lengthy procedures are the major difficulties, the poor conviction rate is also a key challenge before the internet police.
