Cyber crime cases see a rise, most frauds via calls

GURGAON: There has been a marginal embrace cyber crime cases in the location this year as compared to a year ago. From 77 in 2015, such cases increased to 103 in 2016. And a record of sorts, Gurgaon police on December 29 registered nineteen cases under the IT act at once.

Although the 19 cases were filed in a day, cops said, the offences took place during the past. Law enforcement usually register an example under the IT take action only after an initial probe by the internet crime cell. While the cell received 410 issues last year, the amount increased to 456 this season.

Police officers said in these instances, 19 individuals were duped of a total of almost Rs 10 lakh by fraudsters. In the majority of these cases, the scammers experienced called in the victims and cheated them after fraudulently obtaining their account, charge or credit-based card details on the pretext of reviving their plastic cards. The victims came to find out about the crimes only after getting SMSes on the mobile phones from their banking institutions.

Following complaints from the victims, the cyber criminal offense cell found in their preliminary investigation that they were indeed duped and recommended filing of instances. The 19 FIRs were registered in various police channels in the town on Thursday night under Section 420 (cheating) of IPC and Section 66D of IT law (cheating by personation by using computer resource).

“These cases are under analysis, ” said Sumit Kuhar, DCP (crime), Gurgaon.
