Caller cheats a bank manager of Rs 35,000

AHMEDABAD:  A bank manager approached the cyber cell of Metropolis crime branch with an oral complaint about online cheating by cyber criminals.

What surprised the cops were that the bank manager — who is supposed to be more conscious of the dangers of online transactions then a customer–gave the criminals the one-time password (OTP).

The blunder cost bank manager Rs 35, 000, which the fraudster withdrew from his account.

“The bank manager was so embarrassed that he decreased to lodge a written complaint with the cyber cell and instead advised that his case is probed in confidence,  said a senior cyber cell official.

The cyber cell officials said although they could not examine oral complaints, they would keep count on the number from which the bank manager was called by the cheat.

“Last week, a bank manager contacted the cyber cell. Having been first hesitant, but later he spoke. This individual declared that he had acquired a call saying that his debit card would be blocked and this individual should provide the OTP to the caller to avoid further inconvenience. This individual gave away the OTP only to receive a message from the bank about the withdrawal of money from his accounts, ” the official said.

“It is surprising that despite several incidents being reported in newspapers, people still give away their card numbers and OTPs. In this case, it was a bank supervisor, who may be supposed to be aware of the online transaction. However, he committed such a blunder. We have traced the number to Jharkhand. There exists a strong opportunity that Tiku Mandal, the kingpin of the online cheating racket, is involved in this case, ” the state added.
