90% computer users ignore software security warnings

Regarding 90 % of folks disregard software security warnings because they pop up at inappropriate times, such as when users are viewing, observing, typing, publishing and importing their folders, a new research has found.
Researchers found these times are less effective because of “dual task interference, ” a neural limitation where even simple tasks cannot be simultaneously performed without significant performance loss.

For example, 74 % of men and women in the study ignored security messages that popped up while they were in the direction of close a web page windows.
Another 79 % overlooked the messages if these were watching a video. Regarding 87 % disregarded the messages while they were transferring information, in this case, a confirmation code, researchers said.
But you can mitigate this problem simply by finessing the timing of the alerts. Waiting to display a warning to when people are not busy doing something else increases their security behavior substantially.
Experts found that folks pay the most attention to security messages when they take up in lower dual task times such as after watching an online video, waiting for a web page to launch and after interacting with a website.
Timing security warnings to appear each time a person is more likely ready to respond is not current practice in the software industry, researchers said.
Intended for part of the research, researchers had participants complete computer tasks while an functional Magnetic Resonance Image resolution (fMRI) scanner measured their brain activity.
The test showed neural activity was substantially reduced when security messages interrupted a job, as compared to when an user taken treatment of immediately the security message itself.
Its status of warning messages appearing randomly – while people are typing, watching a, posting files, etc – results in up to 90 % of users ignoring them, researchers said.
