7 Technologies, which should be Watched in 2018

5G

If you remember how the 4G LTE connection started almost a decade ago, be prepared to relive this in 2018 with the arrival of 5G.

As in the case of 4G, the idea of 5G is not clearly defined. No one can say for sure how fast such a connection will work, but, most likely, it will be 10-12 times faster than the best LTE networks. Unfortunately, the deployment of networks has not yet begun (so far we have been promised only an option for the home Internet ) and there are no devices supporting the standard on the market yet.

All this should change in 2018. First of all, we will hear more announcements about the launch of 5G-networks from large mobile operators. Most likely, we will also see the appearance of several subcategories and 5G speeds, as it was during the arrival of 4G.

Many of the next generation mobile phones must support one or more 5G subcategories. Perhaps by the end of this year, particularly fortunate consumers will enjoy the benefits of the fifth generation, but a true breakthrough for this technology will be 2019.

Artificial Intelligence

About the AI, machine learning and neural networks spoke all the year 2017, but in the next, they certainly will remain in the spotlight.

However, now it will change that if earlier it was primarily AI in personal voice assistants, then this year it will be about AI in the workplace. Many already use simple bots on platforms to organize a workflow like Slack, but as neural networks and machine learning develop, artificial intelligence will be assigned more and more simple and monotonous clerical tasks.

At the same time, the hullabaloo of the voices calling for greater control over the irresistible spread of AI will only intensify. Also, organizations created to determine a more clear role of AI for society will be offered more specific solutions.

Unmanned Vehicles

Few people will argue with the fact that the technology of autonomous driving has already reached a level that allows you to perform most of the manipulation for us. What holds back the arrival of technology? Legislation.

In the most advanced in this part of the country – the US – in 21 states, it is planned to discuss bills on unmanned vehicles. You can expect that in 10-12 of these states, bills will turn into real laws. The federal government is also thinking about making some changes that will help the further adoption of autonomous cars. All these steps will bring the times when it will be possible to travel from coast to coast on an unmanned vehicles and will help to pull out long-awaited autonomous trucks at the end of 2018 or in 2019.

Robotics

Every time on the eve of the new year I promise everyone that robotics are waiting for big changes, and every time at the end of the year I remain a little disappointed. Neither R2-D2 nor C-3PO we have yet seen. So I felt almost the whole year until I saw it – a video on which an anthropoid robot does a reverse somersault.

Next year, the pace of development of robots will increase due to success in the field of artificial intelligence and neural networks. I do not expect robots to look human and behave like people, but they will become more realistic and intelligent, and new-generation robots can appear.

Cybersecurity

Suspicions of the intervention of Russian hackers in the US elections in 2016 added an additional impetus to the development of cybersecurity. At the end of 2016, a group of representatives of both major parties at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs of the John F. Kennedy School of Management issued a “Guide to the Computer Security of Election Campaigns” with fairly obvious tips for the protection of election campaigns and subsequent elections. Quite an obvious indicator of how seriously everyone began to treat constant threats from several sides.

Technologies for Power Engineering

The continuing energy crisis in Puerto Rico after the hurricane presented a rare opportunity to deploy a power grid based on a combination of solar energy and batteries represented by Tesla ( and several other companies )from almost zero. This really working prototype (and another project for storing electricity in Australia ) will pave the way for radical changes in energy generation and storage for consumers, business, and municipal authorities.

Revolution in retail

Even if for a while to forget about Amazon, which absorbed the entire retail market, offline companies will somehow change how people make purchases pay and what they accept for payment.

Many retailers are inspired by the example of Amazon Go , Amazon ‘s test retail laboratory, and will also create small test outlets where customers can simply go in, take whatever they need and leave without having to interact with sellers or pay stakes.

Bitcoin will continue to grow, but, importantly, it will grow much more steadily, so that even traditional retailers will begin to accept it as payment.People will be able to perform operations with bitcoin through mobile payment systems, including Samsung Pay and Apple Pay.

A few more technologies that are worth watching:

Augmented Reality

In 2018, the main game technology will be virtual reality, but in the long run, a more serious effect will have augmented reality.

Quantum Computing

Scientists have come close to making connections between traditional and quantum computers. By the end of the year, we will see this technology in action.
