17-year-old boy admits seven hacking offences in TalkTalk data breach

A 17-year-old boy has accepted to playing a role in the “significant and sustained” cyber attack that strike UK telecoms giant TalkTalk in October 2015.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was one of the suspects apprehended in last year and charge with breaching the personal computer Misuse Act 1990.

Showing up at Norwich Youth  on Tuesday (15 November), he admitted seven charges with sentencing adjourned until 13 December.

According to the BBC, the teen admitted to using “hacking software” in scanning for weaknesses on target websites.

The TalkTalk hack compromised one hundred and fifty-six, 959 customer records together with 15,656 “obscured” Bank accounts and sort rules and codes.

The incident, which gained a barrage of press attention, was investigated by a joint task force from the NCA (National Crime Agency) and the City Police cyber crime unit.

ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) fined the firm a record British pound 400,000 last month.

“TalkTalk’s failure to apply the most basic cybersecurity measures allowed hackers to penetrate TalkTalk’s systems easily, ” said Information Office Elizabeth Denham at the time.

Many arrests were made across the UK and Northern Ireland following the incident – with some suspects as young as 15.

In July 2016, TalkTalk revealed the after effects from the cyberattack experienced cost it? 42million which reportedly resulted in a halving of its pre-tax profits.

Yet most lately, the UK telecom seemed to be on the rise – claiming an outburst in interim profits. As reported, operating profit arrived at 60 million British Doller for the six months. This was more than double the 25 million British dollars profit reported in the same period 12 months ago.
