Over 700 government websites hacked from 2013 to 2016

Much more than 700 websites of central ministries/departments and of condition governments were hacked between 2013 and 2016, Lok Sabha was told on Tuesday.

As per information reported to and monitored  by the CERT-IN, which works under the IT ministry, as many as 199 websites of central ministries/departments and state government authorities were hacked in 2016, in comparison 164 in 2015, 155 in 2014 and 189 in 2013. This kind of information was shared with Lok Sabha by ressortchef (umgangssprachlich) of state for property Hansraj Gangaram Ahir in a written reply.

From the 8,348 people caught under different provisions of law relating to internet crime, only 315 were convicted during 2014-15, the government said.

In a recent cyber attack, the website of (NSG), a paramilitary pressure comprising anti-terror hacking group, was partially defaced and abusive messages posted on the property page by unfamiliar hackers on January 1. The web site was blocked immediately.

Comparable cyber attacks were also reported on websites of ordnance factories as well as railways.

Ahir said the government had started several policy, legal and technical measures such as audit of the systems and networks, increasing consciousness in area of internet security, sharing threat-related information with stakeholders, issuing advisories on such threats through CERT-IN and NCIIPC,
and capacity development to address the concern of cyber hacking.
