Intel Xeon processor will be renamed

By Prempal Singh 0 Comment May 6, 2017

Many years later, Intel removes E5 and E7 designation of its server processors Xeon and tries to make it more easily understandable symbols of performance and functionality.

Xeon chips will now go under the name Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. Abbreviated processors may be referred Xeon-P, Xeon-G, Xeon-S and Xeon-B.

The more valuable metal, the better the performance of the processor. Platinum is the fastest processors, analogs Xeon E7. Bronze focused on budget servers and the performance of similar models E5.

The new name of the processors will begin to be applied in the coming mid-year server chips on the updated Skylake architecture. Earlier this year Intel launched Xeon E3 processors budget for servers and workstations on the architecture Kaby Lake, they kept the old name.

The Xeon Platinum developers also offer hardware-enhanced security. additional data security mechanisms will be added. These mechanisms can be claimed in the financial institutions and retail trade, which performed a large volume of transactions.

Processors Xeon Gold will receive additional performance, faster memory, enhanced reliability. As a result, they will be suitable for areas of machine learning, pattern recognition, and natural language processing. In addition to servers, such processors can be used in automotive systems.

Intel also provides a broadband connection OmniPath, which previously was only available in the supercomputer processors Xeon Phi. Now they will appear in server processors Xeon Gold. Processors Xeon Silver offers efficient performance at low power consumption, and Xeon Bronze intended for entry-level servers.
