How to install Nessus in Linux

What is Nessus? 

Nessus is a remote security scanning tool, which scans a computer, network and raises an alert if it discovers any vulnerabilities that malicious person could use to gain access to any computer you have connected to a network.

Prior to you install and set up Nessus you have to download it for your operating system that is Linux, Mac or Windows. So you can download Nessus from www.tenable.com/products/nessus/select-your-operating-system while choosing your operating system. In this tutorial I am using Ubuntu 14.04. Then download the setup then follow the below steps:

Go to the location of Nessus and extract DEB package by following command with root permission.

sudo dpkg –I Nessus-6.7.0-ubuntu1110_i386.deb

Step 2: After entering root password then its shows that you can start nessus by typing /etc/init.d/nessusd start

Step 3:  Now type with root permission to start nessus
sudo etc/init.d/nessusd start
And press enter

After this Nessus is start open your browser and in URL bar type localhost:8834

And if you got error or http/https then go to advance and click on proceeds to localhost (unsafe) actually it’s not error, it’s occurred generally convert to http to https. So don’t think about this and proceeds ahead.

Step 4: Now you can see welcome screen of Nessus and click on Continue Button.

Step 5: Register account of nessus with user name and password and remember this for future.

Step 6: If you purchased Nessus then choose according to your package and if you want to use demo version or free then used Managed by SecurityCenter.

Step 6: If you purchased Nessus then choose according to your package and if you want to use demo version or free then used Managed by SecurityCenter.

Step 7: After click on Continue tab, its download necessary packages to let it go.

Step 8: Now just login with Username and password and you can start finding vulnerabilities.
