Force to cast web wide to rush cyber crime in the bud

By Prempal Singh 0 Comment February 8, 2017

With new police chief Amulya Patnaik asserting that preventing cyber crime will be one of his excellent agendas, sources say the department has already fast the process of producing web apps, which would permit one to resort complaints from the comfort of their homes.

It can learn that there will be two sets of programs — one to be employed by all 13 district police units and the other by the economic offenses’ wing. Issues of crime valued below Rs 2 crore will automatically be rerouted to section police for investigation.

A plan to have a well-equipped district investigation device is being chalked away too. Patnaik said area cyber cells would be strengthened in conditions of technology and manpower.

Detailing the features of the app, a senior official told TOI, “A person will need to sign-up with the software to lodge a complaint after which he/she will get a number on both mobile and email. They will also download or print a duplicate of the same. One will be able to publish documents to support the complaint. You can view the status of the complaint by logging in at a later level”.

There will be two sections of accidents — economic offenses, which would be registered under sections of cheating, forgery and criminal breach of trust, and cyber offenses, which would be stuck under IT Act and IPC sections. There will be a kiosk, which will register complaints received in physical form (hard copy) on behalf of the victims.

A “complaint branch” would receive these complaints and assign them to an “inquiry officer”. An interesting feature is the fact if a complaint has already recently been lodged against a charged, then all subsequent ones will be automatically moved to the same query officer who handled the first complaint.

“The EO will study the problem and send emails/SMSes to the people involved — banks, other institutions, and agencies for any information or assistance required in the probe. Thereafter, the EO will meet the accused if he/she is reachable, ” said the officer.
